Basketball takes center stage in Camarillo this weekend as the Gus Macker 3-on-3 Basketball Tournament comes to town.

Gus Macker started as a backyard basketball tournament and has grown into a national 3-on-3 tradition with players of different ages and skill levels competing in fast-paced half-court games. Camarillo is part of the official 2026 Gus Macker tour on August 29 and 30.

Why we like it: It’s a fun community event whether you’re playing, bringing the kids or just stopping by to watch some basketball.

2. Dirt Expo Ventura at the Ventura County Fairgrounds

If you’re into off-road vehicles, UTVs, overlanding, camping equipment or outdoor adventure, Dirt Expo Ventura is probably the event to put at the top of your list.

The inaugural Ventura edition of the Dirt Expo comes to the Ventura County Fairgrounds August 29 and 30, bringing together off-road brands, equipment, vendors and enthusiasts from around the region. The event is presented by Rugged Radios.

General admission is currently listed at $20, with kids 12 and under free.

Why we like it: This feels like a natural fit for Ventura County. Beach on one side, mountains and trails on the other — and plenty of people around here who would rather spend the weekend outside than sitting on the couch.

3. Brittney & the B Sides at Channel Islands Harbor in Oxnard

When: Saturday, August 29 | 4–6 PM

Here’s one for anyone looking for a slower Saturday afternoon.

Brittney & the B Sides performs as part of the free Concerts by the Sea summer series at Harbor View Park in Channel Islands Harbor.

The show runs from 4 to 6 p.m. Saturday, August 29, and the Harbor encourages visitors to bring picnics, blankets and lawn chairs.

The band plays danceable music spanning multiple decades, with a mix of funk, soul and familiar favorites.

Why we like it: Live music, the harbor, an ocean breeze and no admission charge. Sometimes the simple plans are the best plans.

4. Built to Spill Live at Ventura Music Hall

We’re starting the “weekend” a little early with this one.

Built to Spill comes to Ventura Music Hall Thursday, August 27, with special guest PLAYDEAD.

Doors open at 7 p.m. and the show is scheduled to begin at 8 p.m.

Built to Spill has been around since the early 1990s and remains one of the better-known names in American indie rock.

Why we like it: Having venues like Ventura Music Hall bringing touring artists into town is one of the things that keeps Ventura’s local entertainment scene interesting.

5. Simi End of Summer Carnival at Simi Valley Town Center

Not quite ready to admit summer is ending?

The Simi End of Summer Carnival returns to Simi Valley Town Center with carnival rides, games, food, shopping and entertainment.

The Town Center currently lists the event beginning Friday, August 28 at 5 p.m., while local Ventura County event listings show the carnival running August 28–30 and returning September 3–7 for Labor Day weekend.

Why we like it: This is an easy family option and a pretty good excuse to squeeze one more classic summer night into the calendar.
